Rep. Bollin: Economy must reopen before state budget situation can truly improve

State Rep. Ann Bollin today called upon the Whitmer administration to safely reopen all industries – an action that is needed to reinvigorate Michigan’s economy, stabilize the state budget and preserve essential services Michigan families rely on every day.

Bollin, of Brighton Township, made her comments after the Consensus Revenue Estimating Conference, which brings together state economists to forecast the economy and revenue projections upon which the state budget is built.

“The economists now believe the state’s revenues are only going to be down 7 percent, instead of 15 percent,” Bollin said. “While that is welcome news, we must keep in mind that those numbers are artificially propped up by one-time federal COVID relief funds and unemployment assistance provided by the Trump administration.”

Bollin said smart state budget decisions and an influx of significant federal stimulus funding over the past year have helped the state budget, but those levels are unsustainable long term.

“The essential services Michigan families rely on now will not be sustainable unless our economy reopens soon,” Bollin said. “While the state can’t expect to have a truly healthy budget until our economy is fully reopened, I remain committed to laying the foundation for a sound state budget. That means we must be prudent with state spending and continue to search for opportunities to make government more effective and efficient.”
