State Rep. Jim DeSana of Carleton today expressed deep disappointment after the governor signed legislation into law on Wednesday that repeals Michigan’s long-standing ban on abortion.

House Bill 4006 and Senate Bill 2, now Public Acts 11 and 12 of 2023, repealed the 1931 law offering Michigan’s final protection remaining against late-term abortions in the last few weeks of pregnancy. DeSana previously spoke on the House floor about the legislation, urging his colleagues to vote against the repeal.

“It’s a dark day in Michigan, particularly for the unborn child and those of us who value the sanctity of life,” DeSana said. “Now that these bills have been finalized, the lives of unborn children are afforded almost no protection under our state laws.

“There was a time when we recognized life as an objective good, a gift to be cherished, a right to be protected. It is my hope that Michigan will once again value life in all of its stages.”
