An approved resolution offered by state Rep. Jay DeBoyer will help bring awareness to a rare disorder impacting Michiganders and people across the country.

House Resolution 187 declares Feb. 15 as Angelman Syndrome Awareness Day in the state of Michigan. Angelman syndrome is a rare neuro-genetic disorder that impacts about 500,000 people worldwide and occurs in one in every 15,000 live births. It shares symptoms and characteristics with other disorders, including autism, Cerebral palsy and Prader-Willi syndrome, which can often lead to misdiagnoses.

People with Angelman syndrome have developmental problems that become noticeable by the age of 6-12 months. Common signs and symptoms include walking and balance disorders, gastrointestinal issues, seizures and displaying little to no speech.

“It is critical to the success of research and support services to raise awareness amongst the general public and the medical community about this syndrome,” said DeBoyer, of Clay Township. “Because it is so similar to other disorders, more needs to be done to ensure early detection for parents. I am hopeful this measure can continue a conversation regarding this disorder and raise awareness about those in our communities who are impacted.”

Joining DeBoyer as guests for House session as HR 187 was approved on Wednesday were a group of advocates for Angelman syndrome awareness led by Clay Township resident Leticia Dusing. DeBoyer is in his first term representing areas of southern St. Clair County and northern Macomb County in the 63rd House District.
