State Representative Bill G. Schuette on Wednesday supported a House resolution honoring the life and legacy of activist Charlie Kirk.
“Charlie will be remembered as a man of strong faith and a tireless advocate for civic engagement and the freedom of expression,” Schuette said. “He was committed to open dialogue, no matter what beliefs the person across from him held. These conversations spurred young people to get involved in decisions that are impacting themselves and their communities while sticking to a fundamental American truth: we discuss our differences with words and civil discourse, not violence.
“My heart breaks for Charlie’s family and loved ones during this incredibly tragic time. As a country, we should look to the example he has set.”
Kirk was assassinated during an event at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10. Throughout his career, he became a prominent author, radio host and public speaker, appearing on campuses and stages across the country to encourage debate, participation in the political process and the defense of American values.
In 2012, Kirk helped found Turning Point USA, which began as a grassroots effort and quickly expanded into a national movement that has shaped civic involvement for younger generations. Both Michigan State University and the University of Michigan have Turning Point USA Chapters. Kirk visited MSU’s campus in April to engage with students about a variety of topics and issues facing the country.
“Charlie inspired many with his belief that young people could be leaders in the strengthening of democracy and in shaping the future of our nation,” Schuette said. “His keen ability to connect with other young people and provide platforms for their voices left a legacy that will endure long beyond his passing.”
