State Rep. Doug Wozniak recently accepted nomination to a new Uniform Law Commission (ULC) drafting committee charged with revising the Uniform Transfers to Minors Act (UTMA). Wozniak was invited to join the committee by ULC President Tim Berg.

Wozniak was appointed to the ULC at the recommendation of Republican Minority Leader Matt Hall R-Richland Township and the approval of Speaker of the House Joe Tate, D-Detroit.

“I’m honored to have been asked to collaborate with commission colleagues to update this model law,” said Wozniak, R-Shelby Township. “The UTMA was first drafted by the ULC over 40 years ago and is in need of review and revision to ensure it meets current circumstances and needs.”

The UTMA addresses the transfer of property left in a will or trust to a minor recipient.

“This law is about helping kids who have lost someone close to them,” Wozniak said. “It may be obscure, but it’s important, and I’m happy to have the opportunity to help make it work better for those affected by it.”

Wozniak has worked with property transfer and trust law his entire professional career. He also has experience working with ULC legislation, assisting the State Bar of Michigan in addressing real property and trust issues.
